Step 1: Create a myEquifax account

Your myEquifax account is where you control access to your Equifax credit report. You can use your account to freeze or unfreeze (aka thaw) your credit, add a fraud alert, and dispute items on your report.

Creating a myEquifax account is the first step in freezing your credit report online.

To create an account, you need to provide personal information such as your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and current address. You need to create a password too, after which Equifax sends you an email with a code to verify your account.

Equifax clearly outlines the benefits of a credit freeze.

Be sure to create a strong and unique password for your myEquifax account. If you forget it, request a new one via email. You can update your password once you verify the last four digits of your Social Security number as well as your date of birth.

We recommend you use a password manager to help you generate and store unique passwords for all of your online accounts. This gives you an additional layer of protection against data breaches and identity theft.

Once you create your myEquifax account, you can log in to add or remove a freeze.

Step 2: Request a credit report freeze

To put a freeze on your Equifax credit report, select the Freeze option in the left column on your account homepage, and then click the Place a freeze button.

An initial screen where users select that they would like to place a security freeze on their account.

Click the "Place a freeze" button to begin the freezing process.

Accept the terms of use on the next page to continue your freeze request. Don't rush through the process, though—you need to save some of the info on the verification page for future use.

Review the fine print (and check the "Terms of Use" box) before you place a freeze.

Accept the terms and click Next to get to the confirmation page. After you hit Submit, your credit freeze should be processed within a few seconds.

Step 3: Print the PDF and save your PIN

Once you submit your freeze request, download and save the PDF confirmation.

Don't skip this page: Save the PDF, or at least write down your PIN and store it elsewhere.

At the very least, write down your PIN and keep it in a safe place, just in case you have trouble logging in to your myEquifax account later (or in case you want to remove your freeze but don't have access to a secure computer).

1Password, Wirecutter's pick for the best password manager, has an encrypted notes function to help you store your Equifax PIN securely. This lets you easily retrieve your PIN when you need to unfreeze your report over the phone or via mail.

Your myEquifax account is also where you thaw your Equifax report. (You can submit your request over the phone or via mail, but the easiest way to unfreeze it is online.)

  • For your convenience, you may want to temporarily thaw your report if you know when you plan to apply for a new personal loan or credit card. Your report is refrozen automatically on the end date you select.
  • You might choose to permanently thaw your report when you shop for other types of credit such as mortgages or auto loans. Once you unfreeze your report, set a calendar reminder to refreeze it once your loan is issued.

Step 1: Log in to your myEquifax account

After you log in, the status of your credit report is displayed in a box on the right side of your account homepage. Click Manage a freeze to proceed to the next page, where you can choose to either temporarily or permanently thaw your report.

If you want more information on how security freezes work, click Freeze in the column on the left. There's a Manage a freeze button on that page too, which brings you to the same screen you arrive at after you click the Manage a freeze option on your dashboard homepage.

Step 2: Choose a temporary or permanent thaw

Decide whether you want to temporarily or permanently thaw your credit report.

You can unfreeze or thaw your Equifax credit report without using a PIN.

If you choose to permanently remove your security freeze, click Next to review your selection, and then hit Submit to complete the process.

If you want to temporarily remove your freeze, click Next to review your selection, specify the date range, and then hit Submit to finalize your thaw.

You can temporarily lift a security freeze for a specified date range.

You can also unfreeze your Equifax credit report via snail mail. Under federal law, the credit bureau has up to three business days to remove your freeze once it receives your request by mail, whereas it has only one hour to thaw your report when you make your request over the phone or online.

To permanently or temporarily unfreeze your Equifax credit report over the phone, call 800-349-9960. Have your PIN ready to avoid delays.

If you prefer to unfreeze your report via snail mail, download, print, and mail the completed Freeze Request Form (PDF) to:

Equifax Information Services LLC
P.O. Box 105788
Atlanta, GA 30348-5788

The mail option may be the most time-consuming, as it requires you to fill out the form and submit copies of documents such as your Social Security card and driver's license. (Equifax uses these items to verify both your identity and current address.)

For the most thorough protection from identity thieves, you may want to freeze your credit with all three major US credit-reporting agencies.
